Success Story of Poultry Farming at Dawha Village

Background:

Shri Babarao Govinda Gaikwad is a auto driver residing in village Dawha in Malegaon Tahsil of Washim District. He does not have any agricultural land with him. He has auto rickshawa for maintaining his livelihood. He is residing in semi constructed rural house near the Vishwamandir at Dawha. Dawha village is famous for Vishwa Mandir i.e. Universal Temple in this area.

Mr. Gaikwad was in search of one more enterprise for helping his household activities financially. It was planned to have poultry business and he discussed tha matter within his family of 4 members. He has two daughters and one Son. Elder daughter is in 11th standard, second daughter is in 9th standard and son is in 6th standard. It was decided to start the poultry unit near his house in extra space.
He purchased 5 hens from local market and housed in the extra space i.e. backyard of his house. After a few days hen started egg laying. The domestic demand for egg was fulfilled and family was happy with the outcome of their enterprise. They started selling eggs to other needy families when some guests arrived and there was nothing in the village except eggs to treat the guests nicely with non vegetarian food.
Time was passing and Mr. Gaikwad thought of expanding his small enterprise by purchasing some more day old chicks with technical guydance. He got one opportunity to see the stall of KVK at Dawha Yatra during 2005-06. KVK exhibition stall was predominantly showing the benefits of Giriraja and quells, Osmanabadi breed of Goat and many other technologies from other disciplines like Agricultural Engineering, Fishery, Horticulture, Plant protection and Extension Education. Soya processing was also demonstrated by means of soya nuts sell counter in Dawaha fair. The fair at Dawaha ia regularly organised between January and February every year. Mr. Gaikwad contacted KVK animal science discipline for day old chicks and also for technical support of the management of day old chicks.

Initially Dr. Ramteke could not provide day old chicks of Giriraja and asked him to start with any breed available in market so that waiting period can be used for learning the management of day old chicks. He accepted the idea and started incubating the eggs available at his own poultry unit. Meanwhile he searched for the availability of chicks from other poultry dealers. Satpuda breed was available and he started with purchase of about 50 chicks. Feed was brought from Washim through Ms/ Patwardhan Agencies. In the beginning Mr. Gaikwad was in daily contact with Dr. Ramteke for supply of Giriraja chicks as well as for feed management, vaccination and market related aspects of the poultry.
One year passed by this way and Mr Gaikwad had a good grip over the poultry business. His residence was becoming famous for chickens and eggs in the village. Those consuming non vegetarian food preferred to purchse the chickens also for their own requirements and specially to treat the guests. It was observed that about Rs. 1200 per month was received from sale of eggs and chickens of 800gm to 1.5 Kgs every month.

Mr Gaikwad is a entreprenure as he drives auti rickshaw and come s in contact with many persons in the village and outside. He drives rickshaw from Dawaha to Malegaon i.e. Tahsil place and from Malegaon to Washim i.e. district place which is about 20 Kms from Malegaon. He regularly discussed the achievements with many people coming in contact and many people showed intrest in his activity. Therefore, Mr. Gaikwad theought an idea. He started helping the persons interested in poultry activity. He started supplying day old chick to needy farmers. He made a tie up with KVK for Giriraja breed. He kept about 100 Giriraja birds for demonstration as well as production purpose.
As days passed his business started growing and farmers started asking him for feed as well as day old chicks. He was experience ng that the cost of the feed is one of the limiting factor for the growth of poultry activity in the area. He thought of an idea and produced feed with available raw material at his residence. Started to feed the poultry birds in his unit itself. Simultaneously he discussed the idea with Dr. Ramteke and all scientists in KVK. It was suggested to fabricate small capacity mixer for production of feed at reasonable cost. Small pulveriser and mixer can be used for production of feed. Both the units were searched at Akola. Pulveriser was found there and it was purchased at Rs. 14000/-. However mixing unit was not readily available. He contacted his friend who is having workshop at Malegaon. He suggested an idea to fabricate a small mixer unit of about 50 Kg per batch capacity. He discussed and supplied it with Rs. 15000/-. In this way Mr Gaikwad was enriched with poultry unit and feed mill unit. His image in the village was shining as he was growing with small enterprises.
Many farmers started approaching him for the supply of low cost feed as well as day old chicks. The distance of KVK from Dawha is about 60 Kms and it was difficult for KVk to have direct linkage with farmers for supply of day old chicks. KVK was also in need of such persons at remote sites. Therefore for mutual benefit Dr. Ramteke and Mr. Gaikwad started activity in good speed. About 10 poultry units have started in the adjacenet area of the village Dawha. Kalamgavan, Kalmeshwar, Eakamba, Kawardari etc village were accessible to him. In addition to this few farmers in his village Dawaha also started the units.

Most of the SHGs have been motivated through different schemes of Government which are run through Department of Agriculture, District Rural Development Agency etc. Few villages have been identified for formation of SHGs based on their motivation and inspiration also rescores availability and networking aspects have been considered while selecting the villages. Following SHGs were selected for the value addition and income generation programme.

III Effect of the technology/ process on
• Production
Details were worked out on the basis of information available from the Sales outlet named “Swamini”. It has been tabulated below. It may be seen that on an average each member of SHG earned Rs. 1955/month i.e. 65 Rs/ day.

Many other SHGs are trying to incorporate themselves in this activity. KVK is planning to open some more sales outlets in near future in some other tahsils. Funding agencies are required to tap down for infrastructure support.
• Productivity
Each member of the SHG was to go to agriculture land of the other farmers for getting wages for livelihood security and to help their families daily expenses. The earning was not ensured as the daily work was not available in slack months like summer months. It is therefore, due to this innovative methodology 300 women have been benefitted and could earn an amount of Rs. 65 per day by working at their own places and villages.
• Economic gain
On an average each women of SHG earned Rs 65 per day after adopting the technology of value addition with support of SHG and KVK.

• Suitability in the existing farming/cropping system

The benefits of this activity as follows
1. Women were saved from working in hot sun and travelling for want of work to at least 1 -2 Km/day.
2. Minor wounds and illnesses like neck problem received from daily agricultural work was avoided,
3. They could give more attention to small childrens and they also participated in sharing some work.
4. Some women started other related small enterprises like kirana shop, some engaged in their agriculture land management aspects.
Therefore, this type of work can be replicated in almost every part of the Washim District. Upon testing it in One district its results can give guidelines for further expansion in the entire state.

• Acceptance of technology/process in terms of views of the farmers
Many farmers from other district have shown interest in the activities and training on value addition. Some have been trained. All those who got the benefit are saying that the technologies are worth and can give good support of income generation during slack period from agriculture work. This type of methodology can be adopted in entire Washim district. Provided that Government should open small shops at different locations in potential market areas. Similar technique can also be used in all districts with similar situation as that of Washim District.
